| Lord, what have we done to break your heart
this time? Your church has built a wall that Your gospel cannot climb We criticize those among us whose lives are "filled with sin" Ignoring the threat which lies beneath our discipline *Chorus* 'Cause where our words lead, we will follow Will our fountain ever flow sweet again? Is this family so hollow, That we'll break ties that bind For our own carnal minds How is it we expect our family to stand As our foundation is built upon the miry sand Let us lift our brothers and sisters up through our words So the gospel we carry will never fail to be seen or heard Bridge: Just as Judas kissed the Savior's cheek We pray together once a week Then use our lips to betray our own Casting yet another stone As our words can acquit us all We're using them to bring our fall While our sharp tongues and stinging words Open wounds, and stir discord |
Song History 10. Idle Words Back |
Lyrics Jeff Davis, Brandon Willey Music Jeff Davis This song was Jeff's first attempt at writing by himself. He almost succeeded, until he got stuck at the very end of the bridge. Brandon came to the rescue, and wrote the last two lines. Krys VanSlyke played around with a piano part during the recording, and we ultimately added the melodic line to the track. The song's melody line is what Jeff would say the best line he will ever create. This will probably not hold true as many future songs are developed and his song writing skill increases. Lyric thoughts from Jeff One week, I tried to pay special attention to the words and phrases I used when interacting with other people. It didn't work so well... In review, I was appalled at myself for the things I said to people. Surely, I could have found a way to build them up and encourage them instead. Jesus tells us we will be judged by "every idle word you speak" in Matthew, and that's reason enough for me to change my ways. (I'm still a work in progress...) Lyric thoughts from Brandon Though I did not write this song, I hold a huge affinity to it and during my 10-week stay in Chile (summer 2001), I played this song over and over. I was challenged heavily by the lyrics and still strive to keep my words pure and pleasing to God. We must rid our thoughts and mouths of the sarcastic and wall-building filth that pours out everyday, and lift each other up. |
